This is a big question, and most boys cannot answer it directly if you ask them outright. Purpose usually gets discovered sideways, not head on.
Sometimes purpose shows up through struggle, a boy discovers what he cares about by facing something hard and finding out what he is willing to fight for.
Sometimes it shows up through service, doing something for someone else, and noticing which kinds of helping feel meaningful to him and which do not.

Sometimes it shows up through honest conversation with someone outside the family, a mentor who asks the right questions and actually listens to the answers.
And sometimes purpose is not one big answer at all, but a direction, a boy slowly noticing what he is drawn to over months, not a single moment of clarity.
At camp, we do not tell boys what their purpose is. We create the conditions, challenge, service, honest conversation, where a boy can start noticing it for himself.
If you want to help your son with this at home, ask him what kind of problems bother him most in the world, and really listen to the answer.
